Overview

Sumatra is the best surfing ground in Indonesia and probably in the whole world. The constant swells originating in the stormy "Roaring Forties", far in the southern Indian Ocean, travel up north thousands of miles loosing strength and gaining period. When they reach the tropical islands off Sumatra's western coast, situated right at the Equator where the winds are very light (the "doldrums"), they break over coral reefs shaped by those same waves over many millennia.

These unique conditions of constant and long period swells, light winds and perfectly shaped coral reefs originate the best waves in the world. PERFECT GLASSY BARRELS are the most common surfing conditions around here.

And as if this wasn't enough, the weather in these hundreds of Sumatran islands is beautiful for humans, with both air and sea water temperatures varying between 25-30¬ļ C all year round.

Desert white sandy beaches surrounded by coconut trees and crystal clear water complete the paradisiac scenery.

This is a real surfing paradise with wave options for all levels and tastes.

You'll sleep on Mikumba 1, a yacht equipped with the best amenities that can accommodate up to 12 people. The skipper Ruivo Goncalo, real expert of Sumatra and its islands, will help you discover the best waves for an unforgettable experience.

Surf

The most common boat trip is to the Mentawai archipelago, where there are around 50 very good waves, some of them called "world class" such as Maccaronis, HT's (aka Lance's right), Rifles, Greenbush, Telescopes, Roxys, Rags, etc., and also many secret spots. Although the Mentawai is the most crowded area in Sumatra, skippers and surf-guides have been adopting "rules" to make sure that everyone can enjoy the dream surfing conditions. Anyway there are so many different spots to surf that it's not difficult to find good and barreling empty waves.

How to get there

The best way to reach Padang (Sumatra) is to fly to Jakarta, and from here fly to Padang with Lion Air (www.lionair.co.id). Lion Air has 7 flights Jakarta-Padang every day, they use new airplanes and they are surfboards friendly (max. 20 kg/person). Batavia Air and Sriwijaya Air are also good options for this leg, with less flights but also surfboards friendly.
