Surfing is officially an Olympic sport!

Last night (European time) in Rio, the International Olympic Committee officially recognized surfing as an Olympic sport for the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

Surfing will join skateboarding, rock climbing, baseball, softball and karate.

The pioneer of surfing and Olympic swimming champion, Duke Kahanamoku, had already predicted in 1920 that surfing would be an Olympic sport one day.

The heats will take place in the ocean, with real and not artificial waves, generated by a pool. The competition ground will be in Chiba, about 45 minutes far from Tokyo by train. There will be 40 surfers, 20 men and 20 women. The admitted category will be only shortboard. No longboard, bodyboard, or SUP!
