Peniche

The little fishing town of Peniche is probably the most renowned surfing area in the country and it's the place where you can surf the famous and bright wave of Supertubos. Here a WCT event, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, takes place in October. Its beach breaks make this area ideal to learn and improve your surfing.

Surf trip in Peniche

It is an area about 100km north of Lisbon, with many beach breaks and surf camps who have chosen this region because of the quality of the waves and its predisposition to the teaching of surfing. 5 km to the North of Peniche there is Baleal with its dunes and its long beach, exposed to N/W swells. Thanks to its shallow waters and soft sand bottom, this beach is the ideal training ground of many surf camps in the area. The most famous spot in the area is definitely Supertubos, a fast tube which is often a WCT (World Championship Tour) stage (Rip Curl Pro Portugal).

Quando andare

Peniche is a good destination all year round, with consistent waves. In winter swells can grow up to 4 meters, while in summer no more than 2 meters and a half. In summer the most consistent beach is Baleal, but you should wake up early to avoid "La Nortada", the infamous north wind blowing over Portugal from April to August. Regarding the wind, the best seasons are autumn and winter as it blows from the East or North-East, and sometimes from the West, in conjunction with some North Atlantic storms. In Europe, however, it remains one of the most consistent areas, even in summer.
