Il surf

Tenerife has two main areas for surfing. The reefs of the North East coast work with solid N and S swell, while the Southern area, which receives most of the tourists who gravitate around the well-known Playa De Las Americas, works with large NW swells. This area is busy in and out of the water. The famous reef of La Izquierda has a strong localism, but sometimes you just need to move a few miles away to find much less crowded spots. The island has a smaller swell window than the other islands in the Canaries, but, unlike the others, the north east wind is never a problem, generating almost always glassy and clean wave conditions. Tenerife has also the Siam Park, a water park that has a wave pool able to generate left and right waves up to 3 m. (9 feet): a good alternative when “natural” waves are mssing.

Quando andare

The best period to explore the island is winter and autumn, when the solid NW are frequent and air temperature is warm, but even in summer you can find, both North and South, spots working with the summer windswells coming from the South.
