Surf trip Lanzarote

The Canary Islandsare often called the Hawaii of the Atlantic because of the many similarities with the surfing mecca of the Pacific. When the big swells hit the islands, the waves have nothing to envy from the majestic breaks of Hawaii. Swells hit heavy reefs that form beautiful water breaks in the intense blue water. The sun is a constant of the Canary Islands, since it rains very rarely, as the NE wind. Regarding the quality of the waves, Lanzarote is the island to aim for; The heart of the surf scene is the area between Famara and La Santa. Lanzarote embodies all the qualities of the Canary Islands. Swells from double to triple overhead regularly hit the numerous reefs, producing waves of very high quality. The area where some of the best spots are located is between Famara and La Santa. The steady North-East wind can be a problem, especially if it grows in intensity, and it could ruin the waves around the island. Famara beach and La Derecha are less affected by the NE wind. The East coast is inconsistent with the usual NE winds blowing onshore even if, sometimes, when the wind drops, the condition may become good. Jameos del Agua can be surfed with winds from the North-East and people say it’s the longest wave in Lanzarote. Crowding can become a problem on good days when the locals occupy the best spots.

Quando andare

The surf is consistent throughout the year, although the best swells arrive between September and May. The most suitable period is from October to April when the wind is less strong, and often offshore. Summer swells from North West are rare and the good waves are scarce, although the constant North-East winds that blow strongly in this period of the year can generate waves on the East coast, adapt for beginners. The air temperature is pleasant all year round and it rains rarely. The sea water is always fresh, so a good 3/2 wetsuit is ideal for most conditions.
