Surf Trip to Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is a beautiful volcanic island, it's very dry and the sun and the wind dominate throughout the year. The landscape is almost lunar and is the only island of the Canary Islands which has beautiful long beaches of golden sand. The best surfing area is in the North, around Corralejo, with consistent lava reef that generates powerful and long waves. Spots such as La Derecha, El Muelle and Bubble will satisfy the needs of the most demanding surfers. Los Lobos, a very small island in front of Corralejo, owns one of the best right waves in Europe. You need a boat to reach it, but go to the Corralejo harbour and search for some small companies that organize surf trips at Los Lobos. The West coast has powerful beach breaks, very exposed and offshore compared to the constant E-NE wind, but many spots are isolated and difficult to reach because of the poor condition of the unpaved roads. Heading further South you will encounter some excellent spots that work when conditions are ideal. The East coast works with swells generated by the constant wind from the East, but conditions are often onshore, with the sea active.

Quando andare

The best period to go is from October to April/May when the wind is weaker and less frequent. The numerous winter NW swells, with periods often over 12 seconds, will activate the spots along the North and West coasts, this generates high level waves, which form excellent, long tubes. When the swell is huge, it is worth checking the citizen spots of Corralejo, such as El Muelle, a long left that breaks on a plateau of rock. Summer does not see optimal conditions due to the strong thermal winds from Morocco. You can still find few small waves on the east coast, generated just by the wind, but you have to fight against hordes of windsurfers and kiters. The temperatures remain cool throughout the year, necessitating a 3/2 wetsuit for the whole year or so.
