Philippines

Philippines and in particular the Siargao island have gained visibility to the surf community thanks to the discovery of some World class waves like Cloud 9. These islands are still one of the last surf frontiers where you can surf with few mates in the water and live on a shoestring.

Il surf

The Philippines are an archipelago formed by thousands of islands, located between Indonesia and Taiwan. The climate is tropical, hot and humid, especially during the monsoons. The best areas for surfing are located to the East of the Philippines, for example the island of Siargao or the island of Catanduanes, where there are some world class waves such as Cloud Nine and Majestics, two tubing right waves of absolute beauty. The Philippines rely on North Pacific swells and on typhoons crossing Asia from Japan to China to produce high quality waves. The waves are generally shallow reefbreaks, not suitable for beginners. The cost of living is low, but the internal movements are not easy.

Quando andare

The most suitable period to travel to the Philippines goes from July to February, with September and October as the best months. In this season the typhoons crossing the Asia generate frequent swells between 1 and 3 m (3-9 feet). Moreover, in this period the southwest monsoon creates offshore conditions on the eastern coast of the Philippines. Then, after November, the monsoon begins to blow from the northeast, bringing low quality waves around 1 meter (3 feet) because of onshore winds. The tide is never so strong, but the low reefs suggest to do not surf at low tide.
