Sumba, Rote, Savu

Rote is an island close to West Timor, with palm trees, crystal clear sea and white beaches. It receives swells mainly from the southwest, but its reefbreaks are very respectable. The main spots are T-Land, a beautiful long left remembering G-Land, but more accessible, and Suckie Mama's, a short right but very intense and fast.

Sumba, Rote, Savu

Il surf

These three islands lie in the most eastern part of Indonesia and represent from the geographical, cultural and natural point of view the transition from Indonesia to Australia and Timor. From the touristic and surfing point of view, they are islands that still have much to reveal. Sumba is an island exposed to the SW swells, which owns many high quality spots, as Miller's Right, a very long and funny wave. The same comforts that other islands of Indonesia offer here are missing because the facilities are minimal. The overcrowding is never a problem. Savu and Rote are two islands close to West Timor. Rote is almost adjancent, while Savu is almost 200 km far. They are tropical islands with palm trees, crystal clear sea and white beaches. They receive swells mainly from the southwest (swells with too much southern angle may not affect these islands), but their reefbreaks are very respectable. The Savu’s main spots are Savu Rights and Lefts, while at Rote there are T-Land, a beautiful long left remembering G-Land, but more accessible, and Suckie Mama's, a short right but very intense and fast. In order to reach these islands you need to fly to Bali and take one of the connection companies (Batavia Air, Garuda Indonesia and Merpati).

Quando andare

Sumba is very exposed to swells from the southwest coming from the quadrant of Roaring Forties. For this reason, the best season goes from April to October when waves between 1.5 and 3.5 m. (5-11 feet) and with a very high period regularly reach this area. The SE strong winds, typical of these months, can annoy, so you may want to surf in the early morning when they are less strong. In the other months of the year, thanks to its exposure, the waves are never missing, but the size decreases and the winds turn northwest, allowing right breaks to be activated and work in the optimal conditions. For these reasons, it is a period recommended also for beginners. Different considerations are valid for Savu and Rote. Having these islands a swell window typically oriented to south-west/west, the best period goes from May to October, when the big swells from Antarctica reach Indonesia. In addition, these two islands are more sheltered, so the swells come with less power and less size than the other islands in Indonesia. The winds strongly blow from the south-east starting from June, then turning west on September. During the other months of the year, swells are not so frequent and the risk of finding flat sea is quite high. The tide is strong and it is a factor to consider if you want to surf the numerous exposed reefs. The risk of malaria is high enough so you need to take the precautions.
