Il surf

Chile attracts many surfers from all over the world because of its powerful and consistent waves. Especially the northern area, near Arica, concentrates most of the surfers thanks to its mild climate. The waves are generally very powerful and the area is exposed to swells from both south and north, and this makes it one of the most consistent and desired destinations in the world. This is reason why Rip Curl here in 2007 organized a stage of the WCT (World Championship Tour). The spots are both beach breaks and technical reef breaks like El Gringo. The southern area of Chile has more challenging conditions, with very cold water, which discourage many foreign surfers.

Quando andare

Chile is a good destination all year round, with waves ranging from 1 up to even 6 m (4-18 feet). In winter (June to September), the powerful swells from the south generate every day powerful and good quality waves, while in summer the swells come from the north at a slightly lower rate. The wind tends to blow from the south-east, with a tendency to be lighter in the morning. A 3/2mm wetsuit is fine in the winter for the northern regions of Chile, while thicker wetsuits are needed heading towards South.
